The Hidden Ways Your Environment is Draining You (And How to Fix It!)
Your Space = Your Energy
Have you ever walked into a room and instantly felt drained—even if you weren’t doing anything exhausting? Or maybe you’ve entered a beautifully designed space and felt an instant mood boost, like a weight had been lifted?
That’s not just in your head. The environment around you is constantly shaping your energy levels, emotions, and even your ability to focus.
Yet, most of us don’t even realise how much our surroundings are either fuelling us or exhausting us. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unmotivated, your space might be part of the problem.
Let’s dive into the hidden ways your environment could be draining your energy—and, more importantly, how to turn it into a space that recharges you instead!
Clutter Isn’t Just Mess—It’s Mental Overload
We all know clutter isn’t great, but did you know that visual clutter creates mental stress? Studies have shown that messy environments increase cortisol (the stress hormone), making you feel overwhelmed—even if you’re not actively thinking about it.
Think about it:
A pile of unread mail? A silent reminder of unfinished tasks.
Clothes tossed over a chair? Your brain registers it as chaos.
Overstuffed drawers? They create an energy of stagnation.
The Fix: Create an Energy-Boosting Declutter Routine
Instead of thinking of decluttering as a one-time chore, make it a daily 5-minute energy reset.
The 5-Minute Rule: Set a timer and pick one small area to clear—your desk, your bedside table, or your kitchen counter. Small wins add up!
The "Do I Love It?" Test: If you don’t love it or use it, let it go.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind: If you need to keep things, store them in a way that doesn’t overwhelm your space.
Decluttering isn’t about making your space look perfect—it’s about making it feel GOOD.
Your Space Might Be Stealing Your Focus Without You Realising It!
Ever sit down to work but feel distracted, unmotivated, or restless? It might not be you—it could be your workspace itself.
Too many distractions? Clutter, notifications, and an uninspiring setup can kill your productivity.
Bad lighting? Harsh artificial lights cause eye strain, while dim lighting makes you sleepy.
Sitting in the wrong spot? Facing a wall may feel suffocating while sitting near a window can boost creativity.
The Fix: Make Your Space Work FOR You, Not Against You
Upgrade Your Lighting: Natural light is best, but if that’s not an option, try warm, soft lighting to avoid strain.
Control Noise Levels: Noise distractions? Try a white noise machine or instrumental music.
Make It Inspiring: Add plants, a vision board, or an uplifting quote where you can see it.
Even tiny tweaks can turn your workspace from a distraction zone into a powerhouse for focus!
The Silent Energy Killer: Your Home’s "Emotional Baggage"
Energy isn’t just about what you see—it’s also about what you feel in a space. Your home absorbs emotions, and if your space holds stagnant, negative, or stressful energy, you’ll feel it.
Old items with bad memories? They carry the past into your present.
Spaces associated with stress? If you always feel overwhelmed in your kitchen, for example, your brain links that room to frustration.
Unfinished projects? They create an invisible weight of “things you should be doing” every time you see them.
The Fix: Clear the Energy & Reset the Vibes
Burn Palo Santo or Sage: A great way to refresh energy in your home. ( I do this a minimum of once a week)
Play High-Vibe Music: Sound shifts energy—try uplifting tunes while tidying up. ( This is often a time I will get my somatic movement in to lift my vibe
Set New Intentions: Light a candle and say, “This space is a place of love and nuture.” It might sound small, but setting an intention for your space shifts the energy instantly.
Are You Missing the Power of Your Senses?
Your environment doesn’t just affect you visually—it influences you through all five senses. If your space doesn’t feel right, it might be because one or more of your senses aren’t being supported.
The Fix: Create a Multi-Sensory Space That Feels GOOD
👀 Sight: Colours impact mood! Blues and greens are calming, while warm tones create cosiness. Adjust your space accordingly.
👂 Sound: Need relaxation? Try nature sounds. Need focus? Instrumental beats work wonders.
👃 Smell: Essential oils, candles, or fresh flowers can change a room’s energy.
🖐 Touch: Snuggly blankets, comfy seating, and textures that feel luxurious make a BIG difference.
👅 Taste: Even sitting and drinking a cosy cup of tea or having infused water nearby adds to the experience.
Your environment should feel so good that it naturally lifts your mood the moment you step in!
The One-Week Challenge: Reset Your Space & Recharge Your Energy
If your environment has been feeling draining, uninspiring, or just “off”, challenge yourself to make ONE small change every day for a week.
🗓 Day 1: Declutter ONE small space (desk, kitchen drawer, or hallway).
🗓 Day 2: Change up your lighting—bring in natural light or switch to softer bulbs.
🗓 Day 3: Add one inspiring element (vision board, framed quote, fresh flowers).
🗓 Day 4: Cleanse your space energetically (burn sage, play music, or set an intention).
🗓 Day 5: Upgrade one sense—new scent, new playlist, or snuggly blanket.
🗓 Day 6: Rearrange furniture or decor to create a fresh flow.
🗓 Day 7: Reflect—how does your space feel now? What changes had the biggest impact?
Your environment isn’t just a backdrop to your life—it’s a powerful force that shapes how you feel, think, and act. If your home is supporting you, you’ll feel lighter, more focused, and more inspired every day.
But if your space is draining you, making even small changes can transform how you feel.
